States of Being Live
States of Being Live (SBL)Â is a collaborative, community work made with volunteer models. Each person poses for about 20 minutes while I make a whole body portrait. The portraits layer on top of each other, creating an accumulation of figures and a whole, abstract drawing of the community in which individuals are visible. The project is inclusive and meant to draw a group of people together.
Please get in touch if you would like to do States of Being Live with your family, community or organization. SBL is fun and a different kind of portrait project for gatherings of people, large or small: family reunions, corporate sites, community centers.
SBL at LaPop D.C.
In March of 2019 I created States of Being Live with volunteers from the community at LaPop, a Cultural Salon in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington D.C.. Working over the course of four days, I drew thirty-one people altogether. Each person posed for about 20 minutes while I made a whole body portrait of her/him/them.
On the fourth day, a Sunday, I held a free workshop for people interested in making their own life-size, life drawings. Participants ranged from experienced to new artists. I did a demo, teaching my strategy for drawing at life-size and then paired people up so that they could draw each other. It was wonderful for me to see what everybody made and that they enjoyed the project.
